Tech Tuesdays: Talking with Techies Series
This session provides a tour of the resources and facilities available in Second Life, the popular on-line virtual world. Seeing is understanding, and this tour allows you to see Second Life – and specifically InfoIsland and the InfoIsland Archipelago – for yourself. InfoIsland was the first land mass purchased for libraries, librarians and library patrons. Since its founding, a growing number of allied islands have joined what is now called the InfoIsland Archipelago. Join our experienced "Second Lifer" and tour guide for an interesting and learning experience. See the possibilities for your library's involvement in Second Life.
Who should participate? Anyone looking for innovative ideas and practices for their library and new technologies that can be applied in their environment to share information and knowledge and attract customers and users. This session will also appeal to those who want to know more about social computing technologies, to understand the publicity surrounding them in the press and the library community, and to glimpse a potential new way of working and playing in the future.
Benefits of the program: This talk is by an experienced librarian and consultant comfortable in Second Life who guides attendees through InfoIsland and its resources. She opens a new world for many and provides details for those who have dabbled in Second Life. She provides tips for libraries looking to become involved in this immersive environment.
Key topics explored during the session:
- What is Second Life & what does it look like?
- How and why are libraries getting involved?
- What are the issues relating to this on-line virtual world?
- What resources are in the InfoIsland Archipelago?
- Tips for effective use of Second Life for libraries
- Further resources
Method of instruction: Web Conference with audio connection by telephone; supported by handout.
Jill Hurst-Wahl Jill Hurst-Wahl, President, Hurst Associates, has worked in and around information for most of her life. Her background is in information technology and library science. She has been both a programmer/analyst and a corporate librarian. While a corporate librarian, she worked on competitive intelligence research projects and helped to build a competitive intelligence system that used digitization as one of the methods of inputting information. That was more than 15 years ago and Jill has continued to do work both in the areas of digitization and competitive intelligence as well as the new social media. Her blog is Digitization 101.
In addition to Hurst Associates, since 2001 Jill has been a senior instructor for Syracuse University's School of Information Studies, teaching graduate courses in management, digitization, and business intelligence. In 2007, Jill was appointed to the Regents Advisory Council on Libraries, which advises the Board of Regents on matters pertaining to libraries in New York State.
