Web site management can be a daunting task, especially for busy, short-staffed libraries. This course will help library Web managers and Web teams get a handle on what’s involved in Web site management. This six week program will cover the basics of managing, designing, and improving a library Web site. Topics will include Web site management structure, software used in maintaining Web sites, basic design and content tips, and emerging Web site trends.
Who Should Participate: This course is designed for anyone who designs library Web sites, writes content for their Web site, or wants to improve their Web site's usefulness to their customers.
The Key Benefits For Participants: Participants will be leave with basic knowledge of how to manage a library Web site; what software will work for their Web site; have a structured way to design or redesign a Web site; have a basic usability test in hand to perform on their own Web sites; and know what types of content they should focus their energies on.
Key Topics to be Explored:
- Different "best practice" Web site management structures in libraries
- Software used for Web site management, including open source software
- Web site design, from user needs to visual design
- How to create a simple usability test, and how to interpret the results
- Planning content for a library Web site
- Emerging library Web site trends
Structure of the Course: Each week, you will receive an e-mail with the lesson for that week, plus practice exercises that will help you work through the week's sources and reinforce your learning. A Web-based bulletin board will enable you and other participants to ask questions of the instructor and to provide on-line feedback about problems incurred. The course will include a teleconference call with you and your fellow participants, hosted by the instructor, to give advice and clarify the learning experience.
