Web 2.0 has had a drastic impact on the scholarly communication landscape. Scholars are increasingly using academic social networking sites, such as and ResearchGate, to share their research and to network and collaborate with others. However, academic social networking sites are also changing the ways in which academics are publishing, sharing, and using research within the scholarly ecosystem. Many of these more professionally marketed social media sites encourage their users to upload their research, including manuscripts and preprints, to their profiles.

More recently, users can also get direct feedback on their work and critique the work of others using these social networks.
