About this Session:
As Local History & Genealogy Librarian for the Ottawa Public Library, this webinar presenter formed a unique collaboration with the Ontario Genealogical Society - Ottawa Branch. It is unique because the two institutions are delivering programming to patrons, rather than just collaborating over a collection of materials. The presenter created a unique & original Local History & Genealogy Research Club as a regular bi-weekly offering wherein "Club Members" are welcome to bring their research questions and devote that period of time to research with the help of a librarian and expert volunteers. Genealogy is challenging and sometimes isolating, so the purpose of this program is three-fold: 1) Help patrons conduct their research; 2) Form a community; & 3) Acquire data on how this type of patron wants assistance at the library. Learn how this club has helped hundreds of patrons both as fresh faces & repeat users, and has given the librarian a real pride of work.
Participants will learn about:
-How to collaborate with a genealogical society for programming
-Benefits of Collaboration for the library, society, and patrons
-How to start a research club and why
