DO Presents: Machine Learning Behaviour

DO Presents: Machine Learning Behaviour

About this Session:

Information behaviour (IB) is the study of how people “need, seek, manage, give, and use information in different contexts”. Information behaviours shape (and are shaped by) libraries. In many ways, libraries are in service to IB.

With increasingly intelligent and autonomous AI and the growing use of machine learning in many aspects of libraries (collections, operations, service), we need to consider the information behaviour of machines. How do machines “need, seek, manage, give, and use information” and what does that mean for libraries and library users? Let’s find out.

You Will Learn How To:
  • recognize the importance of machine information behaviour (MIB) to libraries
  • apply a basic model of MIB to library collections, operations, and services
  • consider the role of libraries and library staff in assessing and improving MIB

Digital Odyssey is traditionally a one-day conference that brings together 75+ library professionals to explore themes of research, learning, accessibility, and usability associated with technology in libraries. This year, we will be doing themed webinars throughout the summer months that are connected to our chosen 2020 theme: Artificial Intelligence (AI), also known as Machine Learning (ML).

Date & Time:

Tuesday, June 9 from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. EST.
All registrants will have access to a recording for 1 year from the date the session took place.

Pricing:

As a non-profit and a charity, we are launching a pay-what-you-can fee structure for our upcoming webinars to help recuperate our operational cost. We will continue to program webinar content that will support you through this challenging time.

About the Presenter:

Michael Ridley is a PhD Candidate in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies, Western University where he is researching machine information behaviour, algorithmic literacy, and other fun stuff.
For many years he was the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Librarian at the University of Guelph. Currently he is a Postgraduate Affiliate at the Vector Institute and a Visiting Scholar at the Ryerson University Library. Ridley holds degrees from Guelph (BA), New Brunswick (MA), and Toronto (MLS, MEd).
